Our Special Forces Spetsnaz Shovel is modeled after an original Soviet Spetsnaz military entrenching tool It has a stout hardwood handle, a broad flat steel blade and 3 sharp edges. Its ideally suited for digging foxholes and bunkers, to chop branches, build shelters, act as an improvised paddle, and even as a last-resort weapon of defense! Its even an excellent alternative to a Tomahawk for sport and recreational throwing! Our new larger variation, called the Spetsnaz Trench Shovel, has all the winning features of the Special Forces model, with the added benefit of enhanced size. It is 50% longer in length, and has a slightly larger shovel head.

This is the classic CS Spetsnaz Shovel upsized with all the features and foibles of the original. It's carbon steel so it requires regular cleaning and treatment to prevent rust, it sharpens quickly and easily, it's longer than it's mladshiy brat with a wider blade. If you want a cover, Marbles makes a very unsatisfactory cover that does the job of covering the blade but it does so VERY poorly. Hopefully, CS will pull it's head out of it's fourth point of contact and make a suitable cover. Soon. That's why this gets three stars instead of five. This product has been out for quite awhile with ZERO support from CS.
This item is exactly the right tool if one needs to adjust the “environment” is a hostile situation.
Larger and more functional than the Spetsnaz Shovel (the head weighs 1 lbs 8 oz) the size and weight seems to be close to the WWII German Field Shovel that can be seen in the Italian documentary, "Africa: Blood and Guts". Unfortunately, Cold Steel sells you a project that you have to finish, and like all Cold Steel products that have wood handles, it needs to be replaced and riveted on. It is sad to see that only a couple of wood screws are holding the handle on, when Condor attaches their handles with a rivet, BUT once you get past all that you know Cold Steel is tough and durable.
I was able to use this for the first time in my recent multi day camping trip. Processing wood (mainly tinder) and maintaining the fires on the trip was made fun and easy with my trench shovel. I am excited to use my shovel for more trips and see how durable it is over time. I would be more than happy to keep purchasing this shovel if my current one breaks for years to come!
Perfect size for the 4x4 tool kit. Seems a bit new to the market as there are no cold steel or aftermarket sheaths that I could find. Would love it if I could get a sheath for it as well. Maybe in time they will be available?
I bought this shovel to carry in my son’s truck, mainly because the shorter, Special Forces Shovel is not available. Why is there no cover for the business end? That’s a serious shortcoming. I still like the shovel, it’s sturdy and well-made.
Love the longer handle of the trench shovel. Great quality product. It arrived relatively sharp, but I’ve gotten it razor sharp now. Highly recommended. I just ask Cold Steel to please produce a sheath/cover for it, as you have one for the smaller version.
