Description
The Crosman 2240XL is a CO2 air pistol with excellent performance for plinking and target shooting. It delivers the same quality and enjoyment that the standard 2240 offers but with some very intriguing upgrades! The 2240 has historically been a favorite among the modders and tinkerers in the airgun community, thanks to a lot of aftermarket parts and support offered by the New York based manufacturer. Embracing that, Crosman now offers the 2240XL, featuring two key upgrades over the original.
The first upgrade is the inclusion of the steel breech. Featuring an 11mm dovetail for mounting optics, the steel breech offers more rigidity for the barrel. It can also accommodate the LPA MIM rear sight, though there is no provision for a front sight out of the box. Upgrade number two can be found at the end of the rifled steel barrel. A threaded end cap, with 1/2"x20 threading to allow the addition of a moderator or custom muzzle brake to be fitted. This comes with a plastic thread protector to keep your threads from being damaged when not in use.
The rest of the 2240XL matches up with the classic version. Velocities up to 460 fps from a single 12 gram CO2 cartridge, delivering up to 60 shots per cartridge. A genuine pleasure to shoot, the smooth bolt action is easy to operate. With solid performance and important upgrades, the 2240XL deserves a place in your air pistol arsenal.

Good shooting, accurate enough.
Things I Would Have ChangedWas and still is missing the barrel grub screw from the factory. Not worth the effort to return it. If Payramid Air wants to locate and send me a grub screw, that would be great.
What Others Should KnowQA seems to be slipping. Fit was good, finish could use work. The made in China guns, are not the same quality. Lots of rough/sharp edges, sloppy machining.
This is the airgun I should have started with. This is so simple to work with and maintain. The power, with 14-15ish grain pellets (all I've tried so far), is very surprising for what it is. It will shoot one ragged hole at 35 feet.
Things I Would Have ChangedThis should be made in the U.S.A.
What Others Should KnowSkip the light trigger springs and opt for a two-stage trigger setup from a Crosman 1701P or similar. This trigger is definitely manageable with proper control, but it is, without a doubt, the worst trigger I have ever squeezed. (BUY THIS PISTOL THOUGH)
it came with a steel breech. its a 2240, mostly. no leaks and it does works fine. accuracy is as expected. Comparable to my other stock Crosmans.
Things I Would Have ChangedI bought this to modify. As it was marketed as upgraded, good base for mods, I gave low rating value for money and overall. I found that some of the screws on this airgun, now made in China, have been changed to metric screws. I have several 2240, 1377, 1322, marauder... and it took a while to figure out what was going on. Some of the screws aren't the same as previous 2240s. my older guns are SAE threads. I don't recall any metric screws at all. but now some screws are metric. some are not. I have 4mm instead of #8-32 screws, at least on the grip frame to CO2 tube... also if you are looking for iron sights it appears that the Crosman LPA MIM rear sight is near impossible to get. I assume discontinued. the steel breech is cut for this sight. I don't know of any alternatives that fit. The option I have seen is to use the basic plastic rear sight. but that requires machining the rear portion of the steel breech flat. so no real iron sight option stock.
What Others Should KnowI will steer clear of the newer Crosmans from China. Works fine if you plan to use it mostly stock I suppose. Just be aware that not all aftermarket parts bolt on. if screws feel tight. measure them before you crank them down. Glad I did. Talking to some of the folks supplying aftermarket parts, they indicated they have been getting more and more reports of production changes on existing Crosman models. while I love my old crosmans, all this extra effort to mod them is a bit of a hassle and increasing the modding costs...might have been my last purchase of a Crosman. if you want to mod one, strongly recommend trying to buy an older 2240 - then you know what you are starting with.
First, I have to thank PyramydAIR for the warranty service. My first 240XL leaked air so fast it was unusable and Pyramyd made it right. The New Pistol shipped fast and is great and with so many upgrades, the 240XL is a phenomenal buy.
Things I Would Have ChangedThe only upgrade I would suggest is the thread protector is plastic, I would have made it out of metal.
What Others Should KnowWith a red dot sight, it will stack pellets in a ragged hole at 10 yards from a rest. Very accurate!
Overal nice pistol. Accurate, appears well made, fun to shoot and the price is right.
Things I Would Have ChangedRail on top of pistol is supposed to be 11mm. It is not, caliper mesurers it at less than 11mm, about 10.6, 10.5 mm, (measured on two different calipers). Consequently trying to mount an 11mm scope will not fit. Also cocking takes some pull. Perfer Diana Chaser.
What Others Should KnowSuggest you consider Crosman 2240 instead of 2240XL. 2240 comes with iron sites and is less expensive.
A solid well built pistol especially at this price point. Accurate enough out of the box to make one ragged hole at 10 meters about 1.5 inches across. Very good platform for modifications.
Things I Would Have ChangedI changed out the sear spring and polished trigger components even before I shot the air pistol. Trigger was creepy and about 4 lbs, with a lighter spring is breaks crisply at 2 lbs.
What Others Should KnowDon't modify this pistol. If you do, neither Pyramyd or Crosman will honor the warranty. Read the fine print. I put in a lighter sear spring before shooting it. When first shot, this airgun leaked out CO2 cartridges within a few seconds. Since I voided the warranty, I had to disassemble the gun and fix it myself, but it still leaks enough when inserting the CO2 that you get only 26-30 shots. New air valves from Crosman, I was told would take as long as 30 days or more to receive. That being said, I purchased a 2nd Crosman but this time not from Pyramyd. I will shoot it until it proves to function correctly before any modifications. My conversations with Pyramyd were positive and friendly but not helpful in regards to exchanging this defective air pistol to get a correctly functioning air pistol.
Good design and has the features I wanted for less $ than building from a stock 2240. It's been very accurate even with the temporary cheap $6 red dot I'm testing with. Specs are unchanged and all custom parts have fit that I've tried. Crosman parts are still available to order by phone in the USA.
Things I Would Have ChangedIt's made in China now, bring manufacturing back to the USA. I wasn't aware of the change until I received this pistol, and I strongly considered returning it. I build/modify a lot of Crosman pistols, and I will buy used USA made items from now on.
What Others Should KnowIt's a good all-arounder with decent build quality. If you want a USA Crosman hit the used market before prices jump.
I'm totally appalled by the power & accuracy of the Crosman 2240XL, w/a Red Dot it becomes a privilege to shoot w/exceptional accuracy! The ideal pellet pistol for pest control & small game.
Things I Would Have ChangedNothing!
What Others Should KnowYou won't find a better valued airgun for this price!

Fit and finish of the total package. Ergonomics of the handling.Ability to add a modifier. Size of the gun.
Things I Would Have ChangedAccuracy
What Others Should KnowMy personal experience apparently was not the same as other reviewers of this gun both here and on other forums. I could not get the gun to group any closer than two to three inches at 30 feet. I tried various pellet weights and configurations with the same result. I used two red dot scopes that with my other pellot pistols would produce a ragged hole at that distance. I know the gun is not a match pistol. However, with the accuracy it produces for me it is useless.
