Springfield Armory

Springfield Armory's history dates back to 1777 when Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, Gen. George Washington, ordered the Springfield Armory be established to support the efforts of the American Revolutionary War.

History of Springfield Armory

Initially created to store munitions and gun carriages, Springfield Armory began manufacturing muskets for the newly created United States in 1794. For the next 150 years, Springfield Armory would supply for every major American military effort and as a brain trust for firearms development until the government shuttered the facility in 1968.

Just six years later, in 1974, the Reese family, passionate about the firearms industry and Springfield Armory's place in its history, resurrected the Springfield Armory name at its present-day headquarters in Geneseo, Illinois. Beginning with some of Springfield Armory's most historic weapons- like the M1 Garand, 1911-A1 and M14 - the company's new management resurrected the storied name, drawing inspiration from the John C. Garand and John Browning.

Today, Springfield Armory develops products that remain faithful to the heritage of the original Springfield Armory, while developing new and innovative designs as it forges ahead into the future of firearms manufacturing.
